Now you know a little about why this is my Song of the Day for Today. The lively performance of this song brings some joy, as does the weather on this sunny, hot day in Winnipeg as I sit in the recently set-up summer porch writing to you. I haven’t watched it all yet, but I am sure it is up to Beato’s usual informative and entertaining style.Īt a time when COVID-19 case counts and test-positivity are continuing at record highs in my province of Manitoba, Canada, and too-little-too-late restrictions remain, it’s vital to have hope. In addition, American educator Rick Beato features the song in episode 27 of his What Makes This Song Great? series. I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive I get so tired of working so hard for our survival So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away He was sent a copy, and Gabriel approved the use of his song, but said he was uneasy about the main character’s overdose at the end the studio had mistakenly sent him the film Wired instead. The resolution of all the fruitless searches TIL before lending his song In Your Eyes to the film Say Anything, Peter Gabriel asked to see the movie. The concert is also available on CD, LP and. Don’t worry I won’t spoil the plot…ĭays pass and this emptiness fills my heart Originally released on VHS in September 1994, and re-released on DVD and Bluray in 2012, Secret World Live captures the extraordinary live tour, conceived by Peter Gabriel and Robert Lepage, that accompanied the release of Peter’s sixth solo album, US. The boombox belts out “their song” as his attempt to serenade and win back his girlfriend Diane (played by British-born American actor Ione Skye). In a famous scene, the underachieving student Lloyd (played by American actor, producer and activist John Cusack, whose roles often have him brilliantly playing hapless young men mired in mediocrity) holds a boombox on his shoulder in the early morning. The song also appears in American director Cameron Crowe’s film Say Anything… (1989). Canadian musician (and frequent collaborator with Brian Eno) Daniel Lanois joined Gabriel in producing the record. The song initially appeared on Gabriel’s fifth studio album So (1986). The excited audience flicks cigarette lighters on and off in unison, adding a beautiful ambiance to the venue. They play, sing, make dance moves together, and just generally jam in what looks and feels like a celebratory ending to the concert. The song runs for about ten minutes and showcases Gabriel and the entire backing band on a circular stage (there were two stages, joined by a conveyor belt). Today’s selection, “In Your Eyes,” is the final track on the Secret World Live setlist. I’ve previously posted two songs played during that show, the dramatic opening “ Come Talk to Me,” and “ Washing of the Water” (both are from Us). The resulting film was Secret World Live, released in 1994 on VHS tape, then LaserDisc (does anyone remember those?!) and later on DVD. I’m not sure all the places that his Secret World tour played, but during two nights at the Palasport Nuovo in Modena, Italy, a crew filmed the concerts. In Your Eyes (2014 film), a film written by Joss Whedon and directed by Brin Hill. In Your Eyes (2010 film), a Philippine romantic drama. The song is so infused with the scene that she even remembers things differently. In 1993, Peter Gabriel was touring in support of his 1992 album Us. In Your Eyes (2004 film), a film featuring Michael DeLorenzo.

The moment is iconic that even actress Ione Skye admits to Entertainment Weekly that she knows a different song was actually used when her part of the scene was filmed, but her memory is of "In Your Eyes" actually being played.

It's one of those moments that you recognize, even if you've never actually seen the movie the moment is based on. The scene is so famous that it's been copied and parodied numerous times in other films and on television. Who knows if he feels any differently now. For some reason, maybe he just didn't care for the film, he declined to contribute a song for Say Anything. It's almost hard to imagine any voice other than that of Peter Gabriel in that famous scene, but it could have just as easily been the voice of Elvis Costello singing an entirely different song if the singer and decided to do it. But the Peter Gabriel song was later, so I don't think -I'm sure he played a great song at the time -and in my memory it was "In Your Eyes" when I was doing my scene, but it wasn't. Cameron Crowe really wanted Elvis Costello to do that song, and then he saw an early screening of it and didn't want to.
